Our History

People & Winery

In 1920, the Barafakas family cultivates their land in Nemea. In the 1930s-1950s, Yiannis Barafakas and other members of the family create a place for processing and trading suma, a production similar to tsipouro. During the 1950s-1970s, the family expands its activity and starts to collaborate with various distilleries from the area. In 1970-2000, the son of Yiannis Barafakas, Vangelis, continues the viticulture and starts the production of bulk wine. In 2002, the Barafakas Winery was founded by Christos Barafaka, who undertook the first vinification. In 2004, the first bottling takes place, while the harvest comes from the privately owned vineyards of the Barafaka family. Today, Barafaka Winery has grown and produces 12 wine labels and around 300,000 bottles per year, from various grape varieties. In the future, the winery plans to move to new premises surrounded by vineyards, with the aim of developing wine tourism and producing quality wines.

Αgiorgitiko & Τerroir

Terroir: It comes from the French word Terre which means land. In the wine world, terroir includes all those factors that make a wine unique, simultaneously defining its place of origin. In 1971, Agiorgitiko variety was established as a “Superior Quality Designation of Origin Nemea” (SQDO / PDO Nemea). The appellation zone of Nemea is the largest PDO zone in Balkans, consisting of 17 villages in Corinthia and Argolis (10 villages belong to Nemea Municipality). The total area of the PDO zone covers about 4.500 hectares, with 2.500 hectares planted with Agiorgitiko. The viticultural zone is surrounded by mountain masses, which end up in hills and smooth green slopes, creating corresponding valleys. The altitude starts from 92m. and reach up to 1.000m.
